The client
Courtyard New York Midtown West is part of Marriott International. The hotel line is primarily targeted to business travelers. Located in New York, NY with convenient access to public transportation and the City’s top attractions like Hudson Yards, Madison Square Garden, and Javits Convention Center.
Creating a multifunctional plan for 28 floors
The goal was to create a layout that ensured a smooth and intuitive flow guiding people through the space effectively communicating the floorplan design to stakeholders, staff, or event organizers using clear and comprehensive visuals or documentation. With this in mind a clean, minimalistic design was chosen to visualize the compartments of each room and the details of its inventory. This also aligned with the contemporary appeal of the Courtyard brand guideline instruction, which I used as a blueprint for the overall look. I worked in Adobe Illustrator for this using several layers to separate elements from each other, so I could easily work on either furniture, description, or walls. Vector-based design helped to quickly model objects in shape and size without losing any resolution quality.
Accessibility and safety marks
A high mark was set on including accessibility signs to accommodate information for individuals with disabilities and comply with accessibility standards. Additionally, soundproof rooms were marked with a specially designed icon so they would be easily distinguishable from the regular ones. Ensuring compliance with safety regulations, including fire exits, emergency access, and other safety measures, was another focus point of the design.
While some floors had the same ground plan, each floor differed from another in the arrangement of furniture, accessibility signs, and layout,  which required a methodical approach for all 28 floors and attention to detail.
Conclusion
Throughout the whole process I closely stayed in contact with the people of Courtyard to ensure any updates for the plan were correctly transferred to the design. Working on this project involved a deep understanding of spatial design principles, user behavior, regulations, and the specific needs of the space or event. Collaboration with representatives of the brand and a focus on both form and function were crucial in creating successful floorplans.
